What Is Engineering? (Formerly SWE Overnight)

Spring 2025 Information Coming Soon!

What is it?

It is an online program run by RIT-SWE members for high school juniors, regardless of gender. This program offers participants the opportunity to explore various engineering fields through hands-on experiences and interactions with current RIT-SWE engineering students and RIT-SWE alums. The event is held virtually over the course of a weekend in 4 various Zoom sessions.

A mentoring relationship can also be developed through our panel discussions and interactive activity (a kit will be sent to you ahead of time), which helps facilitate the transition from high school to college. Our goal is to motivate and inspire young women to pursue a career in STEM fields (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics).

The Zoom sessions for 2025 "What is Engineering?" will include:

  • Welcome Talk
  • Virtual Tour
  • Student Panel
  • Labs for participants to learn about different majors
  • Interactive Activity building challenge (supplies will be provided in kit)
  • Professional Panel

This year, our section will host 5 labs ranging from topics in the following engineering and science disciplines:

  • Biomedical Engineering / Biotechnology
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Computer Engineering / Electrical Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
