About Us
The purpose of MiPA at RIT is to support underrepresented groups in the fields of physics and astronomy. MiPA at RIT aims to further the interests of, and develop a sense of community among, individuals within RIT’s physics and astronomy programs who identify as members of groups that are underrepresented and marginalized (either in the department specifically or the broader fields of physics and astronomy). Examples of these underrepresented groups include (but are not limited to): - Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) individuals - Gender and sexual minorities, including cis women, LGBTQIA+ individuals, transgender, gender non-conforming, or non-binary individuals - Individuals with disabilities - Individuals who are the first in their family to attend undergraduate or graduate school, and non-traditional students - Individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds - Individuals from religious minority groups of any region MiPA and all MiPA-hosted events are intended to be safe and welcoming spaces for all individuals, especially for those from underrepresented groups in physics and/or astronomy. At no point will any individual be asked to identify their status as a member of an underrepresented group or to justify their participation in MiPA or a MiPA-hosted event. Anyone who attends a MiPA-hosted event or sends or receives emails through the MiPA mailing list shall be considered to be a member of MiPA.
