Hello Tigers!

This week we began to prepare our hives for winter. This meant that hive inspections included checks for Varroa mites and other pests that can hurt the bees while they stay warm inside the hives.

Come this Saturday, 10/15, to the Colby Kitchen (in the tunnels under Eugene Colby hall!) to make lip balm and decorate cookies. Students and their parents are invited!

This Week's Hive Updates

Hive A:
- Top former honey super isn’t super drawn out but there are some frames of honey
- Top box has good honey stores and some brood
- Good population

Hive C:
- Visually saw multiple mites on adult bees
- Lots of hive beetles
- Good honey stores (entire top box is dedicated to honey and the “drone” frame is completely full)
- Very sparse brood and eggs in the bottom box, didn’t see the queen
- Calm temperament

Hive D:
- Some brood caps seen in top box
- Some capped honey, sizable nectar
- Did not conduct sugar roll
- Didn’t see queen or eggs
- No beetles seen

Several members of the Beekeeping Club gathered around a hive, preparing to inspect it.

Hive Inspections

Make sure to fill out our hive inspection waiver before signing up to join us at a hive inspection! Some times have already been uploaded (weather permitting), and you can see all of the hive inspections on our sign up sheet here.
Anyone can join an inspection regardless of experience! Make sure to wear shoes with socks that completely cover your ankles and let the Bee Board member leading the hive inspection know if you have any known allergies to bee stings.

Get Connected!

We have a Discord where we frequently send out reminders about meetings, hive inspections, and honey extractions. Make sure to join here to have access to this information!
