Ohigan and the Vernal Equinox
The vernal equinox is approaching to arrive on Tuesday, Mar 19, 2024 at 11:06 PM EDT. The equinox happens two times a year when the sun is positioned directly above the equator and the day and night are the same length.
As Buddhists, we observe Ohigan at the equinox. The “O” in Ohigan is an honorific prefix and “higan” means “the other shore”. The other shore refers to a place of enlightenment that is liberation from suffering. This is celebrated by practicing the six paramitas, or virtues, which also means “other shore”. During the week of Ohigan, we are encouraged to practice the six paramitas as best we can; or maybe a little better than we usually hold ourselves to.
The six paramitas are 1. Giving, 2. Observing the five bodhisattva precepts, 3. Patience, 4. Striving, 5. Meditation, and 6. Wisdom from studying the Dharma.
At this time, we hold a memorial service for our ancestors to send them the merits of our chanting Namu Myoho Renge Kyo which relieves them of their suffering and encourages them to continue to strive for enlightenment.
For service following the Dharma talk, we will be including prayers for our ancestors. Traditionally, we say their full name and memorial date (the date they passed away if known) during the evening dedication. All are welcome to include their ancestors at service.
