| Hi Philosophers! This Friday (9/12), we're talking about Art: Ethics and Aesthetics!
Art is both the subject of ethical concerns and the source of ethical concerns. There are long standing debates over the ethics of creating art such as issues of ownership and resproduction of art, the funding and patronage of artists, and more recently, cultural appropriation. The ethics of art has been a major point of contention in the last few years with the emergence of AI-generated images.
We'll also be discussing how we define art, whether art can be objectively good or bad, and the nature of the relationship between art and beauty.
Some questions to consider:
- Why does it matter to whom (or what) art is attributed?
- To what extent can we describe and categorize art objectively, if at all?
- What are the definiting characteristics of art?
P.S.: WGSS is hosting a screening & discussion of the movie Her this coming Tuesday (9/17) at 7 p.m. in McKenzie Commons (LBR-1251). Would love to see some of you there!
