Hello members,
We wanted to provide our thoughts on the recent email from Parking and Transportation Services regarding the bus shuttle issues, and update y'all on what Urbanism at RIT will be doing.
If you experience issues with the bus network, let us know by filling out a "My Bus Sucks Report". We will be voicing your concerns at upcoming Student Government Transportation Committee meetings, and encourage you to do the same — the more reports we have, the harder it becomes for RIT to keep letting students down.
The state of RIT's bus system is unacceptable. Since the start of this semester, there have been non-stop problems to the point we are today where for some reason it is acceptable for four undersized and over crowded buses to roam around a campus with over 15,000 students.
In less than 48 hours, over 140 reports have been filed; with an average service rating of 2.15, it is clear the system is not meeting expectations. Students are missing classes, showing up late to exams, and waiting more than 30 minutes in the cold — this cannot continue to be the status quo as we head into the winter months.
The communication from Parking and Transportation Services has been lacking and insufficient. We are twelve weeks into the semester, and yet the student body still does not have a concrete answer as to why the buses are constantly in an unacceptable state. Despite using the same service operator, the University of Rochester is not experiencing these issues to the same degree. In fact, it is still unclear what the root cause of these issues is, and why it seems to disproportionally affect our campus.
RIT claims to be a place where “you’re always on to something remarkable”, but it is hard to do that when you can’t get here in the first place. When Parking and Transportation Services prioritizes parking over transportation — with thousands of students who need the system to be there for them — the result is a fundamental lack of trust in our transit.
To our members - please continue to fill out reports, and share the link (https://ggl.link/mybussucks) with anyone you know who rides the bus or who has recently stopped riding. We also encourage you to join our Discord, where we will be talking about next steps in our advocacy efforts. So long as the network fails to improve, we will get louder — not quieter.
