PCC News for Tuesday, December 3rd:

Image ID: A white fluffy dog sits askew on wooden stairs near wooden walls. A Japanese calligraphy print adorns the wall. Out the window just behind the dog there is a ton of snow. It's winter, at last.

How was your break, PCC? I hope you got some silly fun rest, we did a whole lot of nothing out here in Canandaigua. Some chosen family from San Diego came to visit, we put on records and watched anime. It was dreamy.

May this season of Advent bring a deep hope and curiosity about what might happen next. We'll find the next lily pad together, dear folks.

Worship Remix Tonight: Dinner Dialogue

Pizza time! Might head to PRISM again, might just hang outside Jones. TBD.

I'm interested in hearing what folks' plans are for winter break and what you're watching. We'll keep the agenda light, we've had so few moments this semester to enjoy unstructured time en masse.

Lessons and Carols 2: Electric Boogaloo

There are TWO Lessons and Carols worship services happening this week, want to join us at both?

First, RIT's Ecumenical (all the Christians together) Lessons and Carols will be this Thursday at 4:00 at Allen Chapel. There will be plenty of music, wait until you hear the organ. We could use some student readers for this, are you interested in helping with worship?

Then! Sunday at 5:00 at UR's Interfaith Chapel we'll have our PCC @ UR Lessons and Carols, more of a congregational sing. Let us know if you're interested and we can get a carpool together, we've had RIT folks join for worship all year and would love to show you our beautiful Chapel there.

All the lessons! All the carols. Happy Advent, PCC.
~*~* Christianity is Magic*~*~

Since it's almost Christmas...We're going to talk about Clay Aiken singing Mary Did you Know?

It's hard to put into words how much this song was in the collective psyche 20 years ago. Clay Aiken was the runner-up in the indescribably popular American Idol season 2 reality TV singing show. He was geeky and closeted and Southern until he got a glam makeover, like that meme where a girl takes off her glasses and suddenly she's beautiful. We were so simple, then.

But! I digress. This song hums with anticipation as one would expect during the mystical excitement of Advent. Clay's version is about those shiny high notes and dulcet verses you'd hope from a pop star. He sings with the reverence the song requires.

There's been a ton of discourse about this song since it was written for a church pageant in 1984. Is it a reflection on Mary's naivite and youth? Is it sexist to presume a young woman couldn't know her place in "The greatest story ever told?" Who is the omnisicent narrator asking these rhetorical questions?

Love it or hate it, this song has become a classic. Pentatonix's version is pretty nice, too. but Clay wins, for me. What's your take on this one?

PS according to wiki: In 2017, Toronto-based theologian Jennifer Henry wrote new lyrics that address the criticisms and echo Mary's words from the biblical Magnificat. These new lyrics have begun to spread in religious settings.

Coming Up:
  • Games Can Help is going to be rescheduled for the Spring, I've heard from leadership that it makes the most sense to take everything we learned from planning and take our time with it. Why not? We have time. More on that soon.
  • Drop-in Counseling hours are back from 2:30 - 4:30. We're keeping visits on the shorter side -- around 30 minutes -- to accommodate seeing multiple folks in the window, text me if you'd like a longer visit some other time in the week.
