Subject: Pulse 3: Co-Facilitators are a "We"

Hello RIT 365 Facilitators,

We’re so happy you’re taking time to read this message as many of your questions and concerns are addressed here.

In this issue:

  • Timely To-Dos
  • Bi-Weekly Meetings
  • Coaching
  • Students missing a “Do” experience
  • A Unified Team

FROM YOUR SEMESTER TO DO LIST
Here are the most pressing reminders for this week to keep you on track. You can find the complete list in your training folder.

BI-WEEKLY TEAM MEETING
Bi-Weekly team meetings begin this week for Groups A, B, C, D and J. By now, you should know which meeting group you’re in. To find your group time and location click here. Please contact Deborah with any questions at ddlyop@rit.edu

Please remember your contract requires attendance at 6 of these meetings. If you must miss one meeting you will be expected to make the time up in an alternate meeting.

COACHING
Meeting with students early in the semester helps to form connections, spot challenges early and assist with time management. For students who may be unsure of the value coaching, you may share the following:

“Coaching sessions are an opportunity to check in and share about your experience so far, tell us about what is happening now and what you are hoping for in the future. Then we can talk about your plan for ensuring you get the most out of your time at RIT.”

Coaching locations: Not sure where to meet? Check out these ideas for coaching locations and brainstorm with your Co-Facilitator for some additional ideas.

For more information on all things coaching visit page 34 of the Facilitators Reference Handbook.

STUDENTS MISSING A DO EXPERIENCE
If a student misses a “Do” experience, they DO NOT need to make up the absence.  The portfolio reflection, for all students, is to reflect on the entire PDR cycle.  Please encourage students to reflect and respond to the prompts based on their time in the Plan dialogue, the Do experience, and the Reflect dialogue. For greater detail, refer to these guidelines, also available on the Facilitator Resources website

CO-FACILITATORS, A Unified Team
As Robyn is apt to say, TEAM means Together Everyone Achieves More. This may seem a simple adage, but we’ve found it to be true for our Co-Facilitators. Your Co-Facilitator is the peanut butter to your jelly, the pumpkin to your spice, the chip to your salsa. You’re equal partners in this endeavor to create an engaging learning community in your class and equal responsibility in terms of administrative duties and planning.

To this end, please remember to include both Facilitator names in all announcements and emails to students. When sharing decisions or speaking of the class, us “we”and “our” not “I” and “my". This includes sharing the facilitator space in classes. Give your Co the chance to lead the class when you may do things differently. Trust that they will guide the class while following your mutual plans, even when their style or presence is different from yours.  This diversity of style is one of the greatest benefits of co-facilitation!

Be sure to evenly distribute job duties, including taking attendance in myCourses, meeting to plan out classes, grading Portfolios, and any other needs. Be open in communicating your needs in this aspect. And please, be open in hearing this feedback.

Participate in the Do alongside your Co-Facilitator. These are unique opportunities for you to both connect with your class community and RIT.

Empower your Co to grow. Remember we’ve all come to this position for similar reasons and that unifies us as a team. In the age-old wisdom of Zac Efron “we’re all in this together.” Lean on each other, lean on us, we’re all here to help.
