Subject: Pulse 6: We're all in the Mix

Greetings RIT 365 Facilitators,
Fall Break is almost upon us! We hope you have some time to take a breather and, of course, read this PULSE for important updates.

In this week’s issue:

  • Concerns About a Student’s Well-Being
  • Starfish Early Alerts
  • Portfolio Reminders
  • Coaching notes
  • This Week’s Expert Advice - FROM YOU

IF YOU HAVE CONCERN ABOUT A STUDENT’S WELL-BEING
Sometimes an interaction with a student seems scary or worrisome. If this happens please use theTiger Concern Report to report a student’s behavior that is concerning, worrisome, or threatening from a health and wellness context. Reported concerns are reviewed during regular business hours by the Student Behavior Consultation Team (SBCT). The report can be filed anonymously, but it is helpful to include your contact information should SBCT have additional questions. For more information visit this support and resources page

Also, discuss an action plan from you and your Co-facilitator.  Should one of you email or complete a Starfish flag if they aren’t performing well in RIT 365? Who will follow up with the student? Should you alert the YOP team. (When in doubt, the answer is yes.) Alerting the full support systems is essential, and you are one of those supports!

STARFISH EARLY ALERTS
Faculty/Staff Facilitators will go to Starfish to complete the first round of Academic Progress Reports (Early Alerts). The survey is now open and closes 10/8.
Refer to the Step-by-Step guide available on the Facilitator Resources website and also on pages 71-76 of the Reference Handbook to complete the survey.
Reminder: although the Faculty/Staff Facilitator will be the only one with access to Starfish, decisions about which alerts are submitted should be made jointly by both Facilitators.

PORTFOLIO REMINDERS
Please feel free to contact us with any Portfolio related questions that aren’t answered below:

  • Portfolio reflections are due one week after the Reflect class meeting, you may accept a late portfolio submission.
  • Prompts for students’ view are found in the content section of myCourses.
  • Refer to grading guidelines and training resources for grading resources and how to enter grades in the gradebook. Remember that the rubric can be found in the gradebook.
  • Grading should be shared between the Co-Facilitators. All students should receive feedback from both Facilitators throughout the semester.

COACHING NOTES
Notes from your coaching meetings are valuable and required communication for your Co-Facilitator as well as the YOP team!  No need to be poetically written, just enter the main takeaways from the meeting. If you need more information click to see a recent Pulse.

FROM OUR EXPERTS (YOU!)
Thank you to everyone for attending and contributing to our Bi-Weekly meetings. Your thoughtful advice and caring words helped to boost everyone at each meeting!
Some ideas that emerged from recent meetings include:

Circle up! There’s no need to move furniture around, when you can challenge students to form a chair circle without moving tables.

Respond with a question, not a Thank you, next. Challenge yourself to respond to students with at least one open-ended follow-up question. This could be a question for the student speaking or one open to the class.

Make the most of your time in your community.  When arriving to class, interact with your students and move around the classroom until class begins!  This is amazing ‘found time.’
