Q: What is Cosplay?
A: The term cosplay is Japanese in origin (short for "costume play"), but costume play was originally a hobby from the United States. Cosplay is an activity in which participants wear costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Favorite sources include manga, anime, comic books, video games, and films. While commonly seen at anime conventions, cosplay is widespread across all geek-cultures
Cosplay costumes vary greatly and can range from simple themed clothing to highly detailed costumes. Cosplay is generally considered different from Halloween and Mardi Gras costume wear, as the intention is to accurately replicate a specific character, rather than to reflect the culture and symbolism of a holiday event. As such, when in costume, cosplayers will often seek to adopt the effect, mannerisms and body language of the characters they portray (with "out of character" breaks)
Q: About the Club...
A: Cosplay Troupe was founded around our signature performance, Cosplay Chess @ Tora-Con. Cosplayers would write their own scripts and perform a short interaction for an audience. While still a large focus, Troupe has expanded allowing for many other activities and events throughout the year.
Our weekly meetings usually consist of a 30 minute lounge and socialization period, followed by announcements and a 'lightning talk.' Then, the meeting is concluded with interactive activities and games. We largely focus on improv games, but also teach craftsmen techniques and hold workshops. Its a great place to hang out, meet people and learn a few things along the way.
Q: I don't cosplay, can I still come to meetings?
A: Yes! While wearing cosplay to meetings is encouraged, it is not a requirement. Many members even regularly attend meetings out of cosplay. We will hold cosplay specific events and shows throughout the year.
Q: Do you perform for other convention or venues?
A: Yes! We love to get invited to perform at events. Usually we ask for you to help cover travel costs, and provide free admittance, but we are willing to work with you. Things we have done include cosplay laser tag bachelor parties, hosting cosplay contests or dances, and full scale productions. Please E-Mail us and ask if we can come to your event!
Q: Can anyone join Cosplay Troupe?
A: Membership is only open to RIT Students who pay the $10 club due. Non-RIT and Alumni may still participate as guests at meetings and events, but only RIT students can benefit from membership.
Q: What other events do you hold?
A: While we primarily focus on the Cosplay Snow Festival and Cosplay Chess Show, we do regularly hold cosplay meetups and other performances/events throughout the year. Follow us on Facebook for more info.
Q: How do I sign up for your mailing list?
A: You can sign up right Here!
