McNair Weekly Update

Kate Torrey - Thursday, March 9, 2023

Summer Research Applications Open

Summer research applications are now open and are due March 27. This summer McNair will again offer a 10-week summer research intensive fully in-person at RIT.  The stipend package totals $5500 for the summer.  You do not have to know who your research mentor will be to apply for the summer program.  Priority for funding will be given to students who have not completed research at RIT in the past. Student researchers are not allowed to take classes or work another job (on or off campus) during the summer program without prior written approval from both the program director and their faculty mentor.

For more details and to apply, please use the link to the application below.

Student Research Panel

Curious about what undergraduate scholarly research is really like?
Join us to hear from students who have completed research experiences at RIT.
Our panelists will share the ups and downs of scholarly research and share what their experiences have been like, as well as answering your questions.

Use the links below to register to attend, and complete the survey below if you have completed a research experience at RIT and would like to serve as a panelist.

Research Opportunities

Ready to get out of Rochester for a while?  Looking to do funded summer research?
Check out the many opportunities for funded summer research at universities across the country listed in the McNair Campus Groups general channel feed.
Most of these opportunities pay between $5000 and $6000, plus provide housing, meal plans, and travel money for you to get to their campus.
Nearly all listed opportunities have application deadlines between February 15 and March 1.
There is also a link in the feed to a searchable database of hundreds of additional funded summer research positions.
This summer, the RIT McNair Scholars Program will be giving priority for funding to students who have never done research before.  All scholars are encouraged to apply to research at other universities, but if you have prior research experience at RIT, you are especially encouraged to apply to other universities for this summer to expand your research portfolio.

On March 7 (Tuesday), students from special interest affinity groups can meet with employers who are committed to recruitng a diverse and talented workforce. this will be held at the Gordon Field House from 5-7pm.

Please see attached flyer for more information.

New McNair Graduate Assistant

We have a new graduate assistant for the program!

Dee Murray is finishing up her master’s degree in Health and Well-being Management for the Wegmans School of Health and Nutrition under the College of Health Science and Technology. She completed her bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences here at RIT last May of 2021.

Before going to RIT, Dee went to a local community college (Monroe Community College) and was a member of the CSTEP program there. She participated in undergraduate research under the BRIDGES program in Binghamton University as a student research immersion scholar for the Jentsch Laboratory. Her research was regarding the genetic examination of reward sensitivity. She also presented her research during the 2017 summer conference of the McNair Scholars Program held in Buffalo, NY.
