What’s On Your Mind?

 Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS What’s On Your Mind?

What’s On Your Mind? is a confidential drop-in service offering informal consultation and support with a professional counselor serving as a consultant outside of the counseling center.  What’s On Your Mind? serves two purposes: 1. Allows for students to try out talking to a counselor to see what it is like and if it is helpful before engaging in the formalities of counseling, and 2. To build resiliency by receiving support and consultation from a professional about concerns that may not warrant ongoing counseling but would be beneficial to support overall wellness and resolution of problems as they arise.

Although you will meet with a counselor from RIT CaPS, What’s On Your Mind? is NOT counseling and counselors will be serving within a consultant role. As a result, What’s On Your Mind? does not involve a formal intake or evaluation, is not located in the counseling center, and involves minimal paperwork.

HOW IS What’s On Your Mind? DIFFERENT FROM COUNSELING?

Counseling involves ongoing sessions that usually consists of 50 minute regularly scheduled appointments with a primary therapist who you will have worked together with to develop mutually agreed upon goals. What’s On Your Mind? instead is an informal drop-in resource that you may access from time to time when you find a need/benefit to check-in with someone or to work through a problem.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A What’s On Your Mind? VISIT?

When you meet, the counselor consultant will actively listen to your concerns with openness and acceptance, possibly ask questions to help you to share more and for them to best understand your experience, and will provide support and perspective.
