PULSE 5

Hannah McCoy - Wednesday, September 23
 Events

Hello RIT365 Facilitators!

Welcome to Fall! Just as the cooler weather is settling in, we hope you’re feeling more settled with your classes and Co-Facilitators.

In this week’s issue:
  • Starfish Early Alerts
  • Individual Reflection Grading
  • Attendance Guidelines
  • Roar & Soar

STARFISH EARLY ALERTS

  • Faculty/Staff and Adjunct Facilitators have already received emails from Starfish.
  • The survey opened 9/15 and closes 10/4 at 11:00pm.
  • Step-by-step guide
    • This includes RIT 365 specific instructions and sample messages.
  • You can send an alert (“raise a flag”) at any time, even after the survey closes.
  • Only the Faculty/Staff/Adjunct Facilitator will have access to Starfish, but decisions about which alerts are submitted should be made by both Facilitators.
  • All students should have a report submitted.
    • No flags to raise? Open their Progress Report Survey and click “submit”. This acknowledges that you reviewed your students’ progress and lets advisors know that there are no issues for their advisees in this particular course.
    • Pro Tip: You can also submit a “Kudos” to thank students for their contributions in class and/or for their insightful Individual Reflection submissions!
  • Alert sent but the student is still struggling?
    • Continue to reach out to the student.
    • Offer the student care, concern and flexibility.
    • Students who are overwhelmed/struggling with their workload often focus their energy on other classes and take the F in RIT 365.
      • Each student has the right to fail this class. While we can’t force them to pass, we can keep that door open if they are able to complete the assignments.
    • Consider contacting the student’s Academic Advisor directly.
      • If the student is struggling in RIT 365, chances are good that they are struggling in other areas as well.
      • Advisors may have more insight and provide recommendations.

!! IMPORTANT !! Wait to submit your Starfish Early Alert responses until AFTER the first Individual Reflection due date so you have a clearer picture of a student’s performance.

INDIVIDUAL REFLECTION GRADING

Don’t forget our optional Individual Reflection grading support sessions!
  • Wed 10/7 12:00pm-1pm (Zoom)
    • Link
  • Thurs 10/8 4:00pm-5:00pm (Zoom)
    • Link
These sessions are offered as additional support and do not replace Bi-Weekly Facilitator meetings.

Tips:
  • Share grading responsibilities with your Co!
  • Use the rubric and these Rubric Grading Directions for consistency.
  • Questions? Email Wendy at wsgrla@rit.edu.

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES

As a resource to support questions about supporting students' attendance, please remember to refer to this document for specifics. This and other helpful guides can be found on the Facilitator Resources Site. As a reminder, this document is for our Facilitators reference only; please do not share this document with students.
  • We encourage you to keep the door open to pass the class and even if failure is imminent, please reach out to your students to have a conversation.
  • As a reminder: a withdrawal from RIT 365 is not an option.

ROAR AND SOAR

Reminder for Facilitators: Every Sunday, Academic Affairs sends students a “Roar and Soar” email with timely reminders and success strategies. Your role is to remind students that Roar and Soar emails are delivered every Sunday with helpful tips and links to keep them on track. You can use the information below to direct students to the email when they have questions about these topics.

Roar and Soar Week 6 (Sept. 27)

  • Theme: Solve for success – Challenges help us grow! Successful students use the help available at RIT to push through and accomplish their goals.
  • Tips:
    • Attend Saturday Math Academy. Free breakfast and extra math practice, every Saturday morning at the Bates Study Center.
    • Get Help with Supplemental Instruction (SI). Check the schedule for Supplemental Instruction to find a safe and friendly space for focused help with a class that is challenging for you.
    • Find Drop-In Tutoring. Students can check the tutoring schedule and drop in for tutoring in multiple spots across campus for help with classes.
  • Event reminders:
    • Change of Major Fair: Wednesday, Sept. 30
      • Students can talk with academic advisors, career counselors, and representatives from all of RIT’s colleges at this event.
      • 12-2pm in the SHED Atrium
      • Registration is online
    • Immersions and Minors Fair: Wednesday, Oct. 7
      • Students can learn about immersions, minors, and double majors at this event while scoring free pizza, too!
      • 11am – 1:30pm in the SAU Fireside Lounge
    • Student Flu Shots: 5 Dates in October
      • Students should make an appointment ahead of time and bring their health insurance for these Wegmans-hosted flu vaccine clinics. If a student’s insurance is not accepted, they can still get the flu vaccine at the Student Health Center for $20.
    • October Break: Oct 12-13
      • Just a reminder that there are no classes Oct 12 or 13 to give students a break, a chance to travel, or rest before midterms.
    • Find all events open to the campus at rit.edu/events
